BrothersLawee is a movement exploring the space between heritage and modernity, memory and movement, home and everywhere else.
Founded from a desire to see African textile identity represented beyond the occasions it has traditionally occupied, BrothersLawee began with a simple belief:
Culture should not be preserved only in the past. It should be allowed to evolve.
We see
possibility.
For generations, lace has carried a particular cultural language. It has dressed celebrations, ceremonies, milestones and moments of significance. It has been associated with occasion, status and tradition.
BrothersLawee reimagines lace beyond the ceremonial. We transform a textile deeply familiar to us into contemporary statement pieces designed to exist within modern fashion culture.
Our work brings together textile identity, contemporary design and cultural expression, creating garments that can move between worlds without losing where they came from.
BrothersLawee was founded by Mayowa Lawal as an expression of brotherhood, culture and creative independence. Cofounded by Sanjo Lawal, who celebrates the brand through his powerful artistry recognised all over the world, and Doyin Lawal, who embodies the statement pieces.
The name carries the spirit of a collective: different perspectives, shared roots and a common desire to create something that belongs to both where we come from and where we are going.
We are interested in the spaces between cultures.
The way traditions travel.
The way clothing carries memory.
The way a textile can leave one environment and find meaning somewhere completely different.
This is especially important to us because culture no longer lives within borders. A garment can be made in Lagos, worn in London, photographed in New York and understood by someone thousands of miles away who recognises something of home in it. That movement is culture too.
BrothersLawee contributes to evolution by taking familiar cultural materials and placing them in unfamiliar contexts. We create pieces that allow heritage to participate in contemporary life rather than simply represent a moment in history.
Our work is for those at home and those who carry home with them. For a generation navigating multiple identities, multiple cities and multiple cultures. For people who understand that cultural identity can be inherited, reinvented, shared and reinterpreted.
Not a rejection of what came before.
An evolution of it.
Lace is our identity.
Culture is our material.
And the world is our border.
